Document Weirdness

I'm translating a document (French to English) that was created in Word
Windows (dunno what version).

It's a large document, but not excessive. 8,000 words, but lots of text
boxes and so on. I changed the Language to English US.

I'm trying to do what I always do which is to go paragraph by paragraph
within the file that was sent to me, deleting the original as I go. The
reason: It's pretty heavily formatted and I want to retain the
formatting of the original.

Entering new text is fine. but its very difficult to select single
words or sentences -- either with double clicks or mouse strokes, and
when I do manage it, the selection color is BLACK.

It may be testing the limits of my hardware, but I suspect the file may
be corrupted.

I've tried copying and pasting into a new document -- same problems.

The auto backup seemed to slow everyting down, so I switched it off --
but still the problems remain.

Any suggestions?

Update: I've discovered that double clicks *DO* select a word, and mouse
strokes *DO* select blocks of text -- but the selections are invisible!

So... what is going on and how can I fix it?!

I suppose you won't let us off with "Dunno", will you? (That's Australian
for "Don't Know"...)

When you "pasted into a new Document", did you do a Full Maggie (i.e. Leave
all the section breaks behind...)?

If not, do that now: particularly, leave the Last Paragraph Mark behind.
Make a copy of the document, search replace ALL the section breaks out of
it, then do a Maggie into a new document.

Text boxes are fragile little beasties: if the other user does not have
high-level Word skills, they will be pretty broken.

But more than this I cannot say until I know what CPU type, OS Version, and
Word version you are using. I could sit here guessing all night -- and I'm
not going to :)

Cheers

Thanks for the input!

Right now I'm wrestling with the Language problem -- which may or may
not have anything to do with this document. I may not get to the
following for a while.

Yeah, that's my thought too: fix the Language problem, because it indicates
an application-level malfunction that could have a lot of side-effects.
