document will not open must open from file open menu

I am using 0ffice 2003. I can no longer open a doc by clicking on the
document file. I must first open word andexcel then use the file, open
commands to
open the filefrom the menu. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I found that fix on the server but it did not help foe Word or Excel.

Have you tried reinstalling the Office suite?

Can you determine if you recently installed an update or patch, or another
application or add-in, that might be affecting the file associations?

When you right-click on a Word (*.doc) file, do you see a shortcut menu? If
so, what is the bolded option on that menu (Open should be it). If you
choose "Properties" from that shortcut menu, what does the "Opens with:"
option say? Does it show "Microsoft Office Word"?
