Is there official documentation from Microsoft describing how the
built-in Word count function works? Based on previous postings, these
rules seem to apply:
1- Word counts blocks of text separated by spaces
2- hyphenated words count as a single word
3- text in frames and text boxes are not counted
4- hidden text is not counted
5- text in footnotes and endnotes can be included or excluded from the
count
While testing in Word, I noticed the following:
6- text in comments are not counted
7- text in headers and footers are not counted
8- when track changes is on, new text is immediately counted, but
deleted text is not removed from the count until the changes are
accepted.
What other rules exist? I couldn't find anything comprehensive from
Microsoft's web site to document their word count rules. Does any
documentation exist?
Thank you,
Maggie
