Documents open slowly only when opened from explorer

Hello.

Can anyone help us with this problem with Office 2003?

If we open, say, Word, it opens right away. Then if we
click on File/Open and click on a document, it opens immediately.

However, if we browse to that very same file in Explorer
and double-click it (with Word closed at the time,) it
sometimes takes as long as 30 seconds to open. (The program
seems to open fast enough, but the document doesn't appear
for a long time.)

There is no AV involved on this computer, and the behavior
is isolated to this one computer. All virus and spyware scans
are negative.

(This happens on spreadsheets with Excel too.)

Any suggestions?
