Documents opening as templates...

S

Steve Gage

Hello Folks.

When I double-click on a Word document file, Word opens up the file OK, but
with the name "Document(x)", and asks me to name it upon saving or closing.

If I open a document from within Word, no problem.

How can I fix this obnoxious behavior?

(Office 2000 Pro under Windows 2000 Pro)

Thanks in advance for any tips...

Hi Steve,

It sounds like the default action for Word documents when
double-clicked is set to "New" instead of "Open". To find the default
action, right-click a Word document and note the bold command.

To correct this problem you can either edit the Microsoft Word
Document File Type and change the default action or use the following
to recreate the file associations for Word: go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

If you would rather edit the file type then:

- Open an Exploring Window such as My Computer, or press WinKey + E to
start the Windows Explorer
- Go to Tools/Folder Options
- Select the File Types tab
- Locate Microsoft Word Document in the list
- Click the Edit or Advanced command (depends on os)
- Select the Open action
- Click "Set Default"
