Documents Printing Smaller than font on screen

I can not figure this out. I can have a document set up in word with a
size 12 font, and when I go to print it...sometimes it will print out
really, really tiny, but if I print it a second time it comes out fine!
Anybody have any idea why this is happening? Using 10.2 and Word X.
Please help!

What is your printer? Does it display properly if you select preview in
word? How about the preview button in the print dialog (that opens OS X's
Preview app)?

yup, it shows up fine in preview, and it happens on two different
printers...HP4200 and a Xerox N2125.

What happens if you make a PDF of it via the print dialog box? Does it look
ok? Does it print ok?

May seem unlikely that both printers share the same condition, but have
you checked to see if the drivers for each need to be updated?
Especially if there have been any recent OS updates (Panther to Tiger,
for example).
