Documents saved as Word X while using OS 9.2

Since having a problem downloading some MS Word email attachment, all
of the Word documents on my Imac G4 have the Word OS X icon- If I
click on these Word icons, without Word open I get error message about
requiring Microsoft Office X to open document- When I have Word 2001
open, these same documents open without any problem other than they
are saved as Office OS X documents- I have spent a considerable
amount of time with Apple Tech Support who had no idea- I tried
reinstalling Word 2001 but problem remains-

Any ideas?

It's the "last one installed" that owns the icon.

You need to be booted to OS 9 to do the install, not running Classic.
