documents sometimes open only half-wide

This is an intermittent problem. I don't know what the trigger is. Documents open full length but only one-half width--tall and skinny. No difficulty is encountered in dragging these documents to full width. The view is "print layout."

Typically Word documents reopen in windows the same size as when the file
was last saved - IF the document was "dirtied" before saving. IOW, even if
you resize the window but don't make any change to the content/structure of
the document itself the window adjustment will likely not be remembered even
if you save the file. Also, Spaces can have an adverse effect on the
windowing of any Office documents - Word or otherwise.
