Documents take too long to open

I have a Dell Optiplex GX-240 with Windows XP SP2 and Office XP SP3. Over
the last couple of weeks, Word has developed the problem of taking 15 to 25
seconds to open a document. I have Trend Micro PC Internet Security
installed but even with Real Time Scanning turned off it makes no
difference. In fact, Word behaved the same when Norton Anti-virus was
installed. I SUSPECT it may be the normal.dot template file that is causing
the problem but the Microsoft KB only tells you to call a support technician
for this problem which I'd rather avoid. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Mikey,
Just a suggestion;
If you had Norton previously installed and then uninstalled it from
Add/Remove, it's likely that some files from Norton remain. We have had good
results on completely removing Norton with downloading the version specific
"removal tool" from their site.

Hi Chris,

I'll try that and see what happens although this problem began suddenly even
with Norton installed.

Thanks!

I tried the Norton uninstall tool but it made no difference. This computer
is on a network but it makes no difference if the document is on the server
or on the local machine. Any other ideas?

Possibly the document has an attached template that is no longer
available? Once you get the document open, click on Tools | Templates
and Addins, and see what templates are attached to the document.
