.docx becomes .zip when opened from web

S

Salva

I have installed office 2007 and I can open .docx documents when they are
being open from the computer or a file share.

My problem is when I open a docx from a website. It then asks me to save
the zip file instead of just opening the document.

I have tried to repair and uninstall/install Office 2007 but with same
result.

Does anyone have a tip to get Word to open docx files from web?

Hi Salva,

The Office 2007 .---x formats are zip files, renamed. Depending on how you're opening the files you may need to set the mime types
for those files on the web server to be recognized as older format .doc files.

Today, I found out that it has something to do with Intenret Explorer.
Among other things I reset the settings in IE and now I can open docx files
from our intranet.

Tomorrow I'll try the same on another machine and hope it works.

Thanks

I've been having the same problem with .docx and .xlsx files being saved as
..zip files... and thus I cannot open them. Can you explain what you mean by
'reset the settings in Internet Explorer'? What changes did you make to reset
IE. Thank you.

Hi - just throwing in my 2 cents worth. I too tried resetting my IE settings
(IE 7) and got the same results. I'd be interested in the specifics of how
Salva got it working.

Have two systems, well actually many systems, accessing mail from from same
exchange server via webmail and SMTP through Outlook. A few do not have this
problem but all others do. Leading me to believe that this isn't a server
change. Besides I've entered all the neccesary MAPI entries.

When 2007 documents are opened from within the 'Local Network' (from Outlook
or via explorer etc.) no problem. However when the same attachments are
accessed from webmail, inside or outside the perimeter, they (on most
machines) try to open/save as zip's.

I know the user can change the name post-saving but this is a nightmare
given the number of times it needs to be done.

Now is the exchange IIS still configured incorrectly, and the few machines
that work are a client fluke? Or more likely is there an easy change to the
client that can be GP'ed out?

Any advice (not already tried) would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Resetting IE didn't work for me. Follow the link below for a summar
of solutions. There is a server-side solution if you have control ove
the server. My main client-side solution is "use firefox" :) ... bu
if yo
have to use IE you can use "save as" or you can rename the file afte
download

my problem was similar. several machines saving .docx or .xlsx as
.docx.zip. unzipping didn't work. It isn't a MIME/server side thing,
tried on IIS, apache and ruby with mongrels. Tired of repeating mysel
at this point, decided to give 15 min to the internet and answer th
question, heres a screenshot and instructions, tell me if this works o
doesn't and i'll try to help more. 'windowsnerd.com » .xlsx and .doc

This may help:

Office files don't download correctly from a Web Server; saved as zip
files instead
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00911.htm

In particular, see the part about changing the IE security settings.

We have the same problem here at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. It ha
something to do with IE security settings. If a site is not trusted i
will open the file read the file header and makes a dission on wha
program to use. In case of a docx file it will use zip because it is
zip file. We discovered that the problem was with non IIS web server
who didn't have the correct mime types configured on the server.

We found two option to workaround this problem. You either add the mim
type to the webserver or you add the site to your trusted sites so I
uses the file exstension and not the file header.

Hope this analyses helps... It's not a bug it's a security feature

That worked for me. Thanks! (Adding the site to my trusted sites in IE
Security). Now my docx and xlsx files save and open with MS Office
tools instead of thinking they are Zip files.
