I found a question regarding converting .docx to .doc dated over a year ago. Myself and some others can not read (open) a .docx. What update will fix this? Where is it? I have not updated microsoft office in a long time what is the best way to do this?

I don't think there have been any updates for Office v.X in a long time.

Yes, you will need to manually install the OOXML converter. And spend a
moment to read about it: it will run in two modes: in stand-alone mode, you
can drag a bunch of files to the converter and it will give them back as
..docx files for you.

Be careful not to upgrade your OS until you upgrade to a higher version of
Office: Office v.X won't work properly in Snow Leopard
