does archiving "remove" messages from the mail server?

Greetings! ...

I'm wondering if executing an 'archive' in Outlook will effectively "remove"
associated email messages from the server. ...

I understand that messages are "removed" from the server when choosing to
"Remove from server when emptying 'Deleted Items'" or "Remove from server
after [x] days" (assuming "Leave a copy of message on the server" is checked)
....

but what if someone does NOT specifically choose to "remove" them (as above)
from the server and keeps huge amounts of email? Doesn't that email on the
user's computer "remain" on the server (e.g., count toward the server's total
of email storage for that one user) ... and therefore how/when do messages
become "removed" from the server?

So, the question: what if someone archives a portion of their huge stash of
emails on their computer? Do those archived emails become "removed" from (and
therefore, do not count toward the amount of email storage on) the server?
And, further, if the user does not check the "Leave a copy of message on the
server" is not checked, how do emails become "removed" from the server?

I hope I've made myself clear here. I appreciate your indulgence.

I may have thrown a bit of confusion as I was talking archiving in a verbal
sense rather than archive.pst. AFAIK, it will not remove from my ISP's
server. What I have been doing to ensure an off this machine backup is
downloading to another machine as well every few days, both set to leave on
ISP server. After ensuring I have all the mail, then I log into HTML mail
and delete the old messages. This has never been a problem as the mail on
the server seldom gets above 50M of my 250M available space.

Sorry, Norman, the answer you offer is not even close to addressing my

Anyone else care to try to hit the target relative to my question? Or, is
this rather an obscure topic/reference?

Why don't you test it and let us all know the definitive answer? My guess
is "no". I have tested deleting and unless it went through my Deleted Items
folder, it was not removed from the server. A permanent deletion that did
NOT use the Deleted Items folder did not remove the message from the server.
I suspect that it is the action of emptying the Deleted Items folder that
causes Outlook to tell the server to remove the item. I suspect as well
that the "remove after x days" WILL work, but it will be completely
independent of archiving. I suspect that messages NOT archived will be
removed from the server after x days.
