Does autocaptioning graphs not work in 2007?

I am really confused by this one. We used to have autocaptoining for graphs
pasted into word documents from Excel, but this doesn't seem to work in 2007.
The only way I can make it happen is by going to insert/object/graph, but
this is no use for existing graphs.
