Does Excel 10.0.0 have a crash problem

I find that Excel is crashing on me on a regular basis. I have some
large spreadsheets use the package for several hours each day and have
a crash nearly every day and often have six or more loaded at the same
time but would expect stability from a Unix based system I also have
an extra 256Mb in my iMac giving a total of 512Mb..

I cannot detect any regular pattern.

I have only just upgraded to broadband so have not looked at this
forum until recently and have not sought downloads.

Is this a known problem with a download available?

Well, that's certainly where you'll have to head for: Office 10.0.0 had
quite a few bugs. Couldn't say if this'll be THE answer, but you should
download an apply the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 patches from Mactopia:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX

Once these updates applied, don't forget to "repair permissions" (see
Apple's "Disk Utility") and let's hope everything should be OK...

Updates are now installed and permissions repaired but it still
crashes on a regular basis. Note that I tend to keep Excel
permanently running and can have up to ten sheets open at a time, many
linked and some large.

I have had to resort to manual saving every couple of minutes.

I run in a similar environment and have had nary a crash in months that
wasn't intentionally inflicted (i.e., the result of a known bug that I
was testing).

The only other things I'd suggest:

0) With all Office apps closed, rename your
~:Library:preferences:Microsoft folder. Restart XL. This will create new
office component and XL preferences. If this solves the problem, add
other preferences back (e.g, Word, PowerPoint, Entourage)

1) Run the Remove Office application from the install disk (Value pack
folder), then do a complete reinstall, update and permission repair.

2) Copy the contents of the workbooks you keep open to new workbooks -
if there's any corruption there, that will (hopefully) remove it.
