Just dig right in. You don't need a pen to use OneNote; it's just a
better experience with the pen. I used OneNote on a desktop computer for
months before getting a Tablet PC. It's perfectly suitable for regular
typing.

I understant that you can type with it. I have a need at work to take several
calls and would like to use this to track notes on a calendar as well as
type. I would then like to convert to text and save. Is there a particular
pen that can be recommended? Do you use a external tablet with the pen?
Microsoft doesn't address this at all. I really am new to this.

From the FAQ (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/schorr/computers/onenotefaq.htm)

4.02 Can I use Digital Ink even if I don't have a Tablet PC?

Sort of. If you have a digitizer like the Wacom unit shown at 9.20 below
you can do pen input. A digitizer is a device that attaches to your
computer and accepts input from a pen-like device. Digitizers are built
into the screens of tablet PCs and most PDAs. It's worth pointing out that
the digitizers on Tablet PCs are generally much better than the ones you
attach to a desktop computer - the sample rate is much higher so the
quality of the writing recognition should be much better.

To get Digital Ink, however, you'll also need to install the Tablet PC
version of Windows XP on your machine. It's a superset of WindowsXP and
seems to like alternate input devices much better. Easy to install, but
rather hard to get your hands on. The hitch here is that the Tablet PC
Operating System isn't available at retail. You either have to buy a
Tablet PC or get it via an MSDN subscription. If you want an MSDN
subscription you can order one through Amazon.com -- see section 9.30
below.
--------

In short you're not going to be able to do the ink->handwriting conversion
unless you're running the Tablet PC OS.

Additionally, an external "writing pad" creates a graphic of "handwriting"
which doesn't allow conversion to text. What you create is what you have,
whereas on a Tablet PC with the digital recognizers each stroke of the pen
is read and becomes part of a letter, word or sentence which is then
convertible to text or searchable as digital Ink. The MSDN subscription is
for developmental purposes only.
