does office 2003 override office xp or do you need both?

As Rick said, and I have installed both Office 2000 and just Access 2003
together.
While I am not sure if it asks if you want to replace the previous version,
as I did not ask that, if you install 2003 in a different folder, it should
work alongside 2000.

It wants to install in "Microsoft Office" and I just ask it to install in
Microsoft Office 2003".

As far as your question goes, I do believe I have seen (from my memory) it
mention that "a previous version was detected", and asks if you want to
replace it.
