Does Power Point 2003 support either .avi or .bmp files?

I am currently working on a presentation in which I have an animation saved
as an .avi file. I want to import the .avi into Power Point so that I can
attach Text and Audio to it.

Yes and no. PowerPoint supports whatever your computer system supports when
talking about AVI files. This is because PowerPoint hands off all movies to
your system to play, it does not deal with them itself. If you have the
right computer hardware, the right installed codec (de-scrambler code for
videos) , and the system's video settings haven't been corrupted by some
other program, than yes, you can play an AVI in PowerPoint.

That's why your last sentence concerns me. A PowerPoint presentation can
show an AVI movie, if your system is correctly configured, but will always
play it over all text. This is because the systems video plays over all the
objects on a PowerPoint slide. There is a special way that you can add text
over a movie, but that background of the text box is not transparent.
PowerPoint also does not deal directly with audio files, it hands them off
to the system's sound card. If your sound card can play only one sound at a
time, it may be locked into playing the AVI's sound track (even if it is
blank) and may not allow the sound to play. Most sound cards can handle
more that one sound playing at a time, but some can not. Thirdly, when you
say attach, it implies that you will be able to export the result back as an
AVI. Again, PowerPoint does not do this.

You may be using the wrong tool if you are looking for an AVI file at the
end of your editing -- try Windows Movie Maker. It may already be installed
on your system.

For the text over a video, i know 2 solutions: convert your avi file into a
gif animation. Then you can place text over it. Or you can use a macro
developped by Austin Myers, search there
