does project server require sql server ?

Hi, i am new to project server . Do i need to buy and purchase ms SQL server
when i install project server ? is there any alternative such as MS Access
database file or other database engine or simply no database engine is
needed . Many thanks !

Ken,

You could use the Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE). However, the enterprise
features in Project Server will be unavailable.

I'm using SQL Server Express 2005 and while you do have to make certain
fixes, it looks like it is possible to run it.
