Does the reading pane really set you up for viruses and worms?

Yes, unless you're using Outlook 2003, which introduced protection
against dodgy links (including hidden ones) in emails. Outlook 2003
also has a junk email filter, which seems to get better and better with
each new update.

are still clickable. Is there a way to make it so clicking on blocked links
doesn't open the web page?

Not for OL 2002 or later with all of the updates applied.

Tools, Options, Preferences tab, Junk-email, Options tab, bottom tick
box. Also consider who's in your safe- and blocked- senders lists.
