Does Word 2004 support CMYK images?

I'm having a problem where some JFIF images get inserted into word
docs as solid black boxes. The only difference that I can see between
the ones that show up correctly and the ones that don't is that the
former are RGB and the latter are CMYK. Does anyone know if CMYK is
supported in Word for Mac? (v11.3 build 070131).

Thanks,

Sweth.

"Support" and "Image" are pretty much oxymorons when it comes to Word.
It is truly hopeless.

A quick test here, using the same version of Word, shows that CMYK
jpg/jfif here shows black on the previews and complementary colours
on-screen and when printed.
CMYK tifs are OK.
Particularly when working cross-platform, stick with TIFF. Even with
TIFF, there are several subtle flavours that might trip you up.

In the matter of images, Microsoft shoves its monopoly uselessness at
you whenever it can, with breathtaking arrogance.

If you deal with images a lot, use a different program. You are in Real
Estate. Discuss with your printer whether you should be using InDesign
or Quark when it comes to presenting your to-be-printed material.

Use some software that knows what a colour profile is when it jumps up
and bites you on the bum.

Hi Sweth:

"Officially" Microsoft Office does not support CMYK colour at all, on either
PC or Mac.

In practice, you get "some" ability to handle CMYK on the Mac if the
conversion filters used when handling the graphics are part of QuickTime.

However, current Microsoft Office applications work in a 24-bit colour
space, with no luminance channel. So I strongly recommend that you confine
your graphic activities to 24-bit RGB for widest compatibility :)

If you need to go higher, you can try embedding your graphics as PhotoShop
"Objects". If you succeed (I can't remember whether PhotoShop provides an
OLE "server" or not: if it doesn't, you won't be able to do this...) this
will result in PhotoShop being started to print or display the images. This
gobbles horrendous amounts of memory and CPU when handling the Word docs,
but it gets the job done!

Cheers
