Does Word 98 for MAC work with OS-9?

D

Donna

A retired writer friend has a 4-year old MAC with OS-
9.2. She needs to get a version of Word that wouldn't
tax her old system momory too much, but would work well
(stably) with OS-9.2. Online I read that Word 98/MAC
requires "at least OS 7.5", but would Word 98 still work
well and stably with OS-9? Any information would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Donna,

Word 98 should work fine on OS 9.2 but I would advise your friend to go to
Word 2001 if she can. It's a better application. And if she has memory
problems, she can easily add RAM to her Mac. There are memory chip
discounters online who are very reputable. A couple are

Info was most helpful. Thank you. (For some reason the website wasn't
allowing me to post reply directly to discussion group earlier today. Sorry
about that.)
If you're up for one more question, in what respect is Word 2001 better?
(My friend's word processing needs are pretty simple: stories and songs.) I
can buy Word/Entourage 2001 Special Edition. Would this be a good version?
Thanks again for your assistance.

Word/Entourage 2001 Special Edition has Entourage, but has no VBA - i.e. no
macros in Word - nor AppleScript in Entourage, which can be limiting if
macros or scripts ever offer a solution. It doesn't sound as if your friend
would ever think of using macros, mind you. Word 2001 has some new features
(Data Merge, Contacts Toolbar) especially some that integrate with the
Entourage Address Book, for mail merges, for example, and has some fixes.
It's not _too_ different from 98, but is better. I've just found some
Upgrade versions (i.e. from 98) on the web for $175, which is not bad at
all. And a Word-only Upgrade price of only $78 (no integration with
Entourage, obviously).

Thank you, Paul. It's starting to sound as if Word 98 would work fine for my
friend, since she only writes short stories and songs (no e-mail). And Word
98 probably uses less disc space, I would guess.

If no email, I was perfectly happy using Office 98 (Word, Excel, never
touched powerpoint) for years, and actually preferred Excel 98 to Excel
2001. And yes, I was running it under OS 9.2.2, the last OS 9 version,
though I don't recall about disk space (but I only had a 4GB hard drive and
64MB of RAM, and it was functional).

By this point, Word 98 might not be any cheaper than Office 98. Note that
98 will need some updaters--I believe you can just run the Office 98
updaters (available from mactopia.com, click on downloads) and it will only
install the pieces relevant to the programs actually installed.

Some macros can be really simple, I'd go for Word 98 over Word 2001 Special
Edition with no VBA.

Question :

I had Word 6.0.1.a, and Excel 5.0.1.a which was equivent of Office4.2
(42 can't remeber which).

When I switched from 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 I could no longer use it and had to
purchase Office2001. Most of word would work but some menu items didn't
work or missing. throwing a way typical word (9) file (or whatever) had
no affect, Excel some formulas didn't work. Rendering some of my Excel
files useless until I updates. deleteing the (#) file for excel had no
affect as well.
Yet Word 6.0.1.a makes mention in preference setting menus to look
like 98. which indicated that Word98 was older then 6.0.1.a

How come 98 which older works on 9.2.2 but 6.0.1 which was newer wouldn't.

Hmm, I don't think so. Word 98 was Office version 8, Word 2001 was Office
version 9 (remember the number after the prefs file?)

Word 6.0.1 was the version before Word 98 on the Mac.Word 6.0 came out in
1994 or so. Word Mac never had a version 7.0 equivalent to Word 95 on
Windows. Word 98 is v8, Word 2001 is v9, Word X is v10 and Word 2004 is v11.
Ever since Office 98 (released just before 1998), all Office apps use the
same version number. (Entourage 2001, which was the very first version of
Entourage, though built as an extension of Outlook Express Mac, is also
known as v9, not v1. Excel skipped a v6 as well as 7 and went straight from
5.0.1a to 8.0, i.e. 98.)

was it referring to word98 (PC) style format. 6.0.1/5.0.1 were the only
Mac program from Micrsoft to ever use the excat same menu format and
style that those products on PC's. If you were to open ecah on a Mac and
PC setting side beside you could not tell the difference (except for key
commands) you'd swear some one had pasted the same image on on both
screens. I hated the look to megin with. but then actually liked the was
it was setup and missed it when I went to Office2001.

Very helpful feedback Dayo. It fits my friend's situation to a T. The info
on updates will come in handy, too.
Thanks,
Donna

I've used Word98 successfully with OS 8.1 and 9.1;
however if you change OS's, as I did, you might have to reinstall
Word98
