If Word can't do this, is there any Mac editor that can?
Thanks -Mike

Hi Michael-

Can you be a little more specific about what you are trying to do?|:>)

Sure. I often have to import raw data and I used to use a text editor on
Win2k where I could select down the column as well as across. If I had the
following numbers:
12345678
12345678
12345678
12345678
I could select "5678" from each row similar to a selection in Excel. The
editor basically treated each character as it's own cell. I realize I could
command-select each group, but for hundreds of lines, this would be very
time consuming.

Thanks,
Mike

E.g., you created a table by tabbing, and you want to select only column 2?

You can hold down option as you drag, to select vertically instead of by
line.

If that isn't what you meant, be *way* more specific, as CyberTaz said.

Hi Michael-

Glad Daiya gave you what you needed, but here's a little
"one-upsmanship" -HAHA

If you have a lot of data. the Option-Drag can still be cumbersome, so
you may want to try this variation:

In the example you gave, Click to place your insertion point between
the 4 & 5 on the first row.

Don't drag, but just scroll as necessary to view the last row of data.

Position your pointer at the end of the data (after the last 8 in your
sample) & hold down Shift+Option+Command while you click there.

Hope you find this useful.|:>)

Always glad to learn new tricks! Though in my test (Word 2004), hitting
command as well did not seem to be necessary? Shift-option-click worked
fine. (Making it, of course, the logical extension of a more commonly known
feature, but we all know better than to expect Word to be logical...)
Hope you find this useful.|:>)
Very.
