Does Word's Dictionary load at startup or when spellcheck is invok

An add-in dictionary for medical terminology seems to be slowing everything
down (in a Citrix environment). The answer to this question might lead
toward a solution: "When does Word's dictionary load: at startup, or when a
spell check is invoked?" Thanks for any help!

If you have turned on "Check spelling as you type", then obviously the
dictionary must load at startup. I'm not sure when it loads otherwise, but I
would hope it would be at spell-check time.

Hi Sandi:

The Word main lexicon loads as a .dll at initialisation of any of the Office
programs.

However, add-in dictionaries are normally produced as text files (they're
actually custom dictionaries). They won't normally load until spelling is
invoked. However, spelling runs constantly for most users, so they too will
load at application launch.

A large custom dictionary like that WILL increase Word's resource demands
quite a bit.

How much memory are you allocating? A user with a large add-in dictionary
handline loots of documents or large documents probably needs 512 MB
allocated to their session. Maybe a little less because you're in a Citrix
environment, but not much less :)

Cheers
