Don't display a 0 duration task as a milestone

Project defaults a 0 duration to a milestone. Is there a way to change this
or at least modify it? There are times that you want tasks displayed as 0
duration to show that these tasks are not necessary in a standardized
process, but not to show up as a milestone.

No Problem.
Select the task, double-click to show Task Infomation, in Advanced Tab chech
out "Mark task as Milestone"

Hi Dave,

If you double click on the 0 duration task to show the Task Information
dialog box, on the Advanced tab, there is a check box for "Show task as
milestone". You can uncheck that but unfortunately, this makes the bar
(diamond) on the Gantt chart disappear completely.

The same effect (making the diamond disappear) can also be achieved by
selecting the "Hide Task Bar" option on the General tab of the Task
Information dialog box. The advantage of this approach is that the task
is still a "milestone" to Project and will appear in the Milestone tasks
filter.

We have a project where the PM has to do this manual "uncheck" weekly --
Tasks keep getting flagged as "milestone", the PM does not want them to be
milestones! These are completed tasks that have 0 duration and 100% complete,
but were completed months ago.

How do we prevent this -- or is this just the way it works and we'll have to
live with it?

Any task with a duration of 0d is by definition in Project, a Milestone. If
a task was scheduled, but didn't happen, remove the resource from the task
and then set to 100%. You may need to reset any links it has so following
tasks move earlier.

Thanks for the info -- just to clarify -- these tasks did have resources
assigned when they were active. These tasks closed months ago. Should the PM
still remove the resources?

A task with 0d duration is a milestone with zero work. What do you do that
makes the task have 0d duration?

If the cause of this is updating from Project Server I recommend you re-post
in the project.server group.
