DONT INSTALL ONENOTE!! WILL DESTROY OUTLOOK FOREVER!!

I installed OneNote 2007 Trial. It caused "Configuring Office 2007" dialogue
boxes to pop up every time I started outlook or word or Windows, so I
uninstalled it.

After uninstalling OneNote, Outlook 2003 CANNOT START!!! It pops up a MS
Install dialogue, "configuring Office 2003", and then prompts for a CD, which
I don't have, since Office came with this notebook.

SO - THE MORAL OF THE STORY: If you install OneNote, YOUR OUTLOOK WILL BE
RENDERED UNRUNNABLE!

I didn't install anything else. But I suspect the problem started with the
fact that I declined to install desktop search when prompted by the OneNote
trial. I am guessing that that is what caused installer dialogues to keep
popping up while OneNote was installed. It may also have introduced an
uninstall bug that hosed Outlook.

OneNote doesn't do that to your computer normally.

I have never had good luck mixing and matching versions of MS products. I
upgraded across the board to Office 2007. Also, on every computer the
upgrade seemed to GREATLY slow down the machine so we wiped the boxes and
re-OSed them.

Yes, that is a radical solution, but I have always found that MS loads up
Office with so much OS stuff that it is almost unavoidable not to reformat
the drive. The nice thing is that we do not get complete new versions of
Office all that often.

I guess that nixes my next possible solution: I was considering buying Office
2007 and getting it over with. Now I'm not so sure.

If you look in the Event Viewer it'll tell you what Windows Installer
Office component it thinks it needs. That might be helpful.

Mixing OneNote 2007 with Office 2003 should work. Windows Desktop
Search, whether installed or not, shouldn't cause such issues.
I really don't know what went wrong in your case. Do you have a copy of
the Office CD on your computer? Some manufacturers put it there.

The Event log will tell you what went wrong. Try to open whatever
Office application is kicking off the repair (the install you're
seeing is Windows installer trying to repair something). After this
repair fails, or succeeds look in the event log to see which Office
component it is trying to repair.

I build installs for a living. I know what I'm talking about.

Thanks, doc. I ended up finding a copy of Office 2003 - once I had that CD,
everything worked fine. If I had the space, I'd just copy the whole CD to my
harddrive so I don't have to go through this again.

Alas, no, I had no Office CD on my computer. But I was able to find a copy
of the Office CD, and as soon as I put it in, the Outlook dialogue recognized
it and fixed me up.
