don't know where to start!

After just cleaning up a big mess with excel was told to download updates,
however I have discovered that the copy of Office 2000 Pro is only shortcuts
not fles. Can I download updates to shortcuts? I have been using these
"shortcuts" for years and then it went all to heck and a handbasket. I don't
even know where to start to get this fixed!!
