Oh yes! Mac OS X's worst UI design mistake.
See that little triangle to the right of the box where you are supposed
to put the file name?

Click it babe!

PS you earned the "babe" for that cloying mis-spelling of "please" ;-)
This is a fairly civilised newsgroup. We rather like the people to whom
we give advice, to have a name. Not least because we hope that some
time in the future, you will be able to offer some help in return.

erk, that does sound snotty. Sorry. Put it down to the rather excellent
red I found in the back of the cellar.

Sorry I should have been given more details. I do see some files an
directories under my current location, but I don't always see all o
them. For instance I may create a directory to place my files in unde
Finder but then when I browse to that location under the "Save As
option I don't see that folder. Sometimes restarting Word clears thi
issue though. This is a sporadic problem

I do have the triangle clicked in order to expand the browsing window.

Thank

I think what you are experiencing is the Mac OS equivalent of jet lag :)

Newly created folders are not always *immediately* accessible. The OS
requires a period of time to "refresh" - how much time varies with whatever
other processes are going on.

Especially if the app is already launched when the new folder is created the
app may not be able to see the new folder right away... Particularly if the
app is already focused on the parent folder of the new one and is fairly
deep in the hierarchy.

The quickest 'fix' to force the OS to refresh is to switch to a different
folder, then switch back.

The lag may be more pronounced on an Intel Mac because the folder is being
created by the OS but the app is running through the Rosetta layer. Don't
*know* this to be true as I haven't used one of the new Macs, but have seen
it while I was still running Classic apps under OS X.

Sounds funny to me. Compare this picture with what you see on your
machine.

If you get no progress, wait a minute and try again, my ADSL line is
going up and down like a ....

Do you really have something like that and sometimes get a display that
does not let you navigate over your whole machine/network, or that
sometimes when you drill down into a directory the folder that you
thought you created there in finder is not visible?

PS, for anyone looking that picture. How do I get rid of that
"Description... Compatibility check recommended" malarkey?

I'm not sure when it arrived, but I wish it would go away. That level
of "helpfulness" is worthy of Microsoft Bob, the blithering paperclip.

It arrived with 2004. I've become completely adept at ignoring it. As far
as I know, that's your only option!

Welcome to multi-tasking operating systems :)

One way to avoid this is to close all Finder windows after creating the new
folder. If you do that, when you do a Save As in Word it is forced to
re-instantiate the Finder and it should then read the latest state of the
file system.

Word does not draw its own file handling dialogs: it calls the Finder. The
dialogs you see are Finder windows. If you have all other Finder windows
closed, the Finder should re-read the disk before displaying its content.

Whether or not it *does* is somewhat dependent on system load. If it's too
busy, you'll get the "old" version :)

Another option, of course, is to use the "New Folder" button built into the
Save As dialog. It *will* display the folder it just created in that Finder
thread :)

Cheers

Just to add a little to this. Round here, Tiger's finder is better at
handling refreshes than earlier versions of OS X.
If only we could say the same for Spotlight, which is hit or miss big
time.

Thanks everyone for the many posts. I'm going to verify all my Finde
windows are close and see if I run into this problem any more.
Unfortunately the problem is sporadic so it may be alittle while unti
I can say for sure it cleared it up.

Thanks Again

THANK YOU!! Can you believe I have just had 3 days of speaking to various
'levels' on the microsoft helpline for frigging 150 U$ and they ended with
saying that i would just have to copy my whole HD (55G) to a new user - I was
no way! I am sure this is a setting and I got told of - he was the techie not
me and if I wouldn't listen to him he wasn't going to help me - he was SURE
this was a MAC problem - all this time just the frigging little triangle -
THANK YOU!
