Don't update certain fields at print

Word 97

I have various fields in the document, and want update at
print turned on (for page numbers etc.) but not for the
fillin and ref fields. Otherwise when I print, the popup
windows for each fillin field appear again... Is there a
switch that says 'don't include in update at print'?

Thanks

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for the reply. That field locking is good, but I
do want the fillin fields to popup when the document
(template) opens, and then lock once the data is entered.
Then moving on to the next fillin field. So that on
opening a new document using the template the user can
enter all the data as the popups appear one by one, but
then not have the popups appear again (and have to press
cancel, cancel, canCel....) when printing.

My thought was that, after the prompts have appeared, the
fields in the document could be locked (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F11).

If you need finer control than this, then you'll need to use
a macro. And in that case, it may make sense to do away with
Fillin fields altogether and gather data with a UserForm.
there's a tutorial on how to do this on the word.mvps.org
website.

Hi Toby,

Don't know if you are still reading, but I have been wrestling wit
some of the same issues you seem to be...I think.

I have several fillin fields, plus I want page numbers to update (I'
using Page x of Y). I got frustrated by repeated canceling of th
dialog boxes at print time (after having filled them in once already.)

In Word 97, I selected Tools|Options|Print and deselected "Updat
Fields." That worked to get rid of the repeat dialog boxes at prin
time.

To update the page numbers before printing, I click the Print Previe
icon on the tool bar, then...on the Print Preview icon bar, I selec
"Close." The page numbers are updated.

Hope that helps yourself or someone
