Don't want new file in Excel - any way to turn off?

I'm using Office 2008 on Leopard. When I click the Excel icon in my
dock, even if the application is already open, it always opens a new
blank workbook. Is there any way to turn this feature off? Most times
if I am going to Excel it's to open a file that I have stored
somewhere and this blank document opening is annoying. Thanks in
advance for any help!
