DOS box popup during Word Save

Does anyone know what could be going on here? We're running Word 2003
on Windows XP Pro. The first time during a login session that we do a
Save As in Word it takes a minute or more before the Save As dialog
box opens. I'm guessing that it has something to do with trying to
check all the mounted network shares and waiting for them to time out.

Today it got worse for one user. Every time one user does a Save As, a
command prompt type dialog opens that is titled "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" and stays open until Word
is closed.

Any ideas?

Couple things to review. Is the default Save As location on an
accessible drive? The "slow response in the Save As dialog" usually
occurs when you click the pull down to change locations, and then it
start checking all the other drives. And second did you perhaps install
SP3 just before this started?

We haven't yet installed SP3. All our file locations are on the C:
drive. The slow opening of Save As has been happening for months.

Is the results the same for all PC's and users? Is the view set for
Previews or just Icons? Has disk clean up been run to remove all
temporary files? You wouldn't happen to be running roaming profiles or
the like? As for the one user with the "dos box" I would suggest doing
Help, Detect and Repair.

The slow opening of Save As happens for everyone that I ask. It's slow
for icons. I've run disk cleanup without it making any difference. We
are using roaming profiles, but RUP is scheduled to be turned off
within a month (too much overhead to the company). The pop-up DOS
window is only happening for one user. I'll suggest they try a repair.

Doing the repair didn't make any difference to either the speed or the
pop-up.

As for the speed, I think the roaming profiles are the issue. As to the
"DOS window" I wonder if the "compatibility mode" got set on Word
somehow. Right click on the shortcut used to start Word and see if there
is a "compatibility tab". Another thing to get more info about it is to
check Task Manager for new processes or application entries right after
Save As is invoked. Compare before and after.
