dot with image; docs are much smaller

I have a dot file that without image is about 90k; very little text (two
paragraphs), does have some vba code. I add a 15k gif to it, it swells
to 160k. But a doc created with this dot is only 45k. Is this because
the image is not embedded in the doc? But, the image in the dot does
seem to be embedded in the doc, I've moved the file to a pc that is
completely off the network and has never had a copy of the dot file, and
the image remains on the doc.

Another item I really don't understand is that recently the doc file
sizes were running up to 360k, and all I did was pull out the embedded
image as a gif (15k) and reinsert the image.

Was the template created in an older version than the documents? It could be
that a more recent version of Word is doing a better job of graphic
compression. I would expect the VBA to add some to the template's size, as
well.

Hi - No, all were created in word 2000.
