Dots on Trace Precedents Arrows

In Excel 2007, what is the meaning of the blue dots that appear on the
trace precedents arrows? I have an average formula that references
some non-contiguous cells. When I click Trace Precedents it shows a
line down the column containing the cells, but not every cell is
referenced in the formula. I thought the blue dots indicated the cells
that were referenced, but that's not the case. Any ideas? Thanks,

I cannot repeat this. I have numbers in F1, F7 and F12 and in F14 I have the
formula =AVERAGE(F1,F7,F12). With Traces Precedence on, there is a blue line
from F1 to F14 with dots at F1, G7 and F12 and the arrow is in F14 as
expected.

This =AVERAGE(F1,F4,F7:F10) results in dots in F1, F4 and F7 with a box
around F7:F10

best wishes
