Double-click attachments do not open

XP, Outlook 2003 using Exchange server, cache mode disabled. Double-click
Word attachment - Word 2003 starts, but the attachment never opens. Outlook
dialog box message is Cannot locate the file specified. Right-click
attachment, choose Open, the file opens just fine. Any ideas? I'm stumped.
