Hi Gail

I did the Excel Exe/regsever and the tools to options addins and the Ignore
other application box was unchecked, you suggested and it still when I
select an excel program it only goes to the Excel application and will not
open the file until I go to file/open and re-find the file under local disk.
I thought perhaps because the files were created before the reinstall of
Excel was the problem. Before the re-register it would say it could not find
any of the files I was looking for. I must have messed some thing else up.
Fortunately I can get to my files even thought I have to go through the open
menu of the Excel program.

Hi Ray

If the Ignore other application box is unchecked, Tom's other suggestion
should bring you back to being able to open files from Explorer.
Reinstalling Excel should not have had any cause/effect on your current
problem. Re-register Excel and you should be good to go

Thanks, Tom, the mystery phrase seems to be gone. In an attempt to get rid
of this problem my son in law suggested I remove and reinstall Excel 97. Now
I have to go through Excel to open any of my spread sheets, is there a way
to remedy this, or am I stuck with this? I go to my excel listing for the
spread sheet and excel comes up, but I have to open it which goes
automatically to My Documents and then I have to go to local disc and find
it again.

with excel open, go to tools=>Options=>General and make sure Ignore Other
Applications is not checked.

if that doesn't help with the opening, close excel, go to the windows start
menu and select run

enter

Excel.Exe /regserver

and click OK.

This will reset Excel's registry settings.

As far as the other, it sound like you have a bad addin or a bad file
containing code in you xlstart directory.

Go to windows=>Start menu and select run

do

Excel.Exe /s

to open in safe mode. If the errant entry does not occur, then this is
probably the source of the problem. Go into tools=>Addins and unselect any
addin you are not sure is OK. Also look for any files in your excel start
directory and move them out if you don't know what they are for. (I assume
you haven't written code in your personal.xls that would do this.)

I am using XP and Excel 97 and Excel files will not open when I double click
them from a Windows Explorer window.

In addition, the following text is placed in worksheets every time one is
opened:
[pn":Dt ie\ehn uhrnCuc\yoia aayCmesto omte\03IceetlIpeetto opnainxs)

1. How can I get my Excel files to open when double clicked.
2. How can I prevent this text from automatically showing up with each Excel
worksheet?

Thanks for your help.
