Double-click opens read-only

Tim Bourne

I have a problem where double-clicking on a Word document
in Explorer sometimes (about 1 in 3) randomly causes the
file to open read-only, with no message. I'm running Word
2003 with Windows XP Home, both fully patched using
Microsoft Update. None of the files have the read-only
attribute set.

I've already tried renaming normal.dot to force the
creation of a new one, and running winword /r to
re-register Word. I've also checked that the file
association is correct.

There is no other machine active on the network, and no
other user on this machine.

Any further ideas?

Thanks,

Tim.

Couple more questions for ya.

1. Is it only this one document?

2. Does it only happen on this computer?

3. When it does happen, is there a lock on the file? If the document shuts down
abnormally, it could leave the file lock behindd in the folder which would
prevent it from opening properly the next time.

If your document is: Text.doc
Check for: ~$Test.doc

No, it happens at random on any document, as far as I can tell.
2. Does it only happen on this computer?
I think I've seen the same thing on my laptop, but less often.

No, there are none of those files in the directory.

Thanks,

Tim.
