Double click opens Word but not the document

Word 2007 up to date

Have had this issue for about two months. Word worked properly for almost two years before.

Followed advice from this forum to delete the Data Key via Regedit the following Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

The first time I double-click any .doc it works as expected but then fails again.

What is corrupting the "Data" key?

How do I fix it?

Sounds like a bad third party add-in. Test by running in Safe Mode. From
Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Open a document and test for editing and closing now. If it
is OK now, then you have installed something that has placed an incompatible
add-in in Word/Office. The add-in may be corrupting the registry, so I
suggest that you remove ort disable all add-ins, delete the Data Key again
and test to see if that resolves the problem.

See how to find add-ins

I have the same problem with Word 2003. Very frustrating. Did you manage to
find a resolution? Would appreciate any help.
