Double clicking office documents opens the program but not the doc

R

Russ

We are running office 2007 and 10 out of 20 of us have the following issue:
When we double click a doc (excel, word, etc..) in windows explorer the
program (i.e. word) opens but the doc does not open unless you click file >>
open.

Installing all updates does not help.
Uninstalling and reinstalling office does not help.
repair does not help.
winword /r doesn't help
please don't send replies that are dealing w/ this issue in word 97 :) this
is office 2007.

any other ideas appreciated!

Try running Office Diagnostics (Start, Program, All Programs, Microsoft
Office, Microsoft Office Tools).
What virus scanner do you have?
Do you have any add-ins for Word, Excel etc installed?

Office passes diagnostics.
no add-ins.
Symantec Antivirus corporate 10.2. Disabling antivirus has no effect.
Thanks

Hi Russ,

Are these local drive documents or on a network path?
Does each user have a separate normal.dot file?

In Windows, if you delete the File association for Word document then use the Winword /R
from Start=>Run
does it recreate the association?

I think i like where you are headed.
Yes, all the docs are on network drives.
After lots of installs and repairs I"m finding this problem much more
prevalent in excel than any other office app. Anyway... yeah - all docs are
on our file server.
Nothing has been 'messed with' w/ re: to normal.dot. I would imagine all
users (myself being one) have our own normal.dot in
<drive>:\users\{username}\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows (this is vista).
I don't understand why people keep saying 'recreate the association by
running winword /r'. Obviously the association exists fine because when I
double click a doc or docx microsoft word DOES open -- it just doesn't bring
up the doc. right? Anyway, to answer your question, I've tried that and it
doesn't help. On one guys XP computer (running office 2007) when he
double-clicks and .xls or .xlsx excel opens but the doc doesn't come up - if
he minimized excel then re-maximizes it. Anyway... any more thoughts
appreciated!

TIA

Russ

Hi Russ,

There are multiple file associations for Word document types. If you delete, specifically, the .doc association and then run
Winword.exe /r
it tries to repopulate the associations with the default characteristics,

or skip that /r step then try to open a .DOC file from Windows Explorer after deleting the association you should be prompted as to
what program you want to use/set as default for opening .doc files.

If after doing that you don't get the .doc files opened you may also want to check to see what add-ins are running in Word as those
can sometimes intercept the normal run of the app.

Try - <a href="http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/excel.html">xlsx repair</a>, this tool can scans the specified Microsoft Excel worksheet and gets all available information from it, recovered from the damaged folder, a single mouse click is enough to export the data to Microsoft Excel and continue working with it, supports almost all existing versions of XLS and XLSX formats: Microsoft Excel 97, 2000, XP, 2002, 2003 and 2007 (xlsx repair).

After many tries to solve the current issue, I find the solution !
Try to uninstall (not just disable) and reinstall your Antiviru
Program.
It worked for me
