Double clicking on pdf files

I have pdf files in my Word repertoire. When I double-click them, I'm
sent to a converter that gushes out junk. If i presse open with
acrobet, of course, the program does so perfectly. But why can't I get
the same result by simply double-clicking. I've indicated in Folder
options that pdf files should be opened by Adobe. What am I missing?
TIA

Where are you when you double-click the .pdf files? If you're in Word's Open
dialog box, Word expects that you're trying to use Word to open those files.
This is expected and correct behavior, even though it's not useful behavior.

If you're in Windows Explorer, however, then the default behavior when
double-clicking would be to open them using Adobe Acrobat.

If--in Windows Explorer--it is defaulting to opening .pdf files using Word,
then the file association for the .pdf file is broken. I would suggest
reinstalling Acrobat, or using the properties editor to change the default
behavior for .pdf files.
