Double-clicking on Word document icon does not launch Word X

Running Word X (10.1.5 Office X update). When I double-click on the
icon of a Word document, nothing happens. It does not launch the
application. I can open the document via File > Open File, but that is
annoying and I should be able to just double-click.

To add a twist to the tale, it is inconsistent. I have identically
configured machines that act differently. On one, I can double-click
and Word starts as advertized. On another, the previously described
behavior exhibits.

Any ideas?

Hi Mack,

Try repairing permissions on the machine that's giving you trouble:

For OS 10.2.x or 10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:
