Double-clicking opens template, but not document

Office 2007, both Word and Excel (I haven't checked other applications), has
suddenly developed an irritating quirk. When I double-click on the icon for
an Office 2007 document, all it does is open the template. If I want to get
to the document itself, I have to open it from within the template. It worked
properly before, and I don't know what has changed. I am using WinXP Pro. Any
suggestions? Thanks for any help.

What I meant was that it opens the application, but with no document present,
not even a blank new one.

No, I didn't. Well . . . now I did, and it worked. Thanks for your help. In
retrospect, it seems so obvious that I don't know why I didn't think of it
myself.
