Double clicking

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

When I double click a word in a document it does not select the word. Did I turn off a feature somehow?

Double-clicking isn't a feature of Word that can be turned on/off. It's an
OS functionality supported by the program. The first step I'd take is to get
the 10.5.5 Combo Update from Apple Downloads, apply that, then repair
permissions & restart the Mac.

Going to System Preferences => Mouse, then reducing the double-click speed,
should fix it.
