double download of all yahoo email messageson restarting entourage

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Email Client: pop

I quit entourage and restarted it the next day, and it went and re-downloaded all my email messages from my yahoo account (>5,000). Why did this happen and what can I do to avoid it/fix it in the future?? Is there anyway to delete the duplicate emails in entourage other than manually? Help!! and thanks.
