Double-Hyphen Merged/How to Break this Setting

Hi...my employer is writing a book and he needs to change all double-
hyphens that have merged due to some setting in MS Word.

How do I change this setting so it doesn't merge hyphens?

Word Options, Proofing tab, AutoCorrect Options, under both AutoFormat and
AutoFormat as you Type, clear the option for Hyphens (--) with Dash (-).

Can't think why anyone would want two hyphens instead of an em dash, though.

Thanks.
I was told that his publisher will not allow a double-hyphen that is
merged for some odd print-related reason.

But it isn't "a double hyphen that is merged." It is an em dash, which is a
typographical character found in all fonts. The only reason two hyphens were
ever used in the first place (to represent dashes in typed material) is that
typewriters don't have an em dash key.

An em dash isn't recognized by WinXP as a character for a file name or as a
name if used to zip files. A double dash can be used instead or a single
dash as well.

That is true. But where does anyone mention using either double-dash or
m-dash as a filename?
