Double icons in address line

S

Stan Boelman

Hi all;

I thought I knew how Entourage works but this is odd. I am trying to send
an email letter to 5 groups from my Entourage address book. One of the
groups has 68 addresses and the others range from 37 to 45 addresses each.
Probably about 200-250 in total.

Now, I have never had a problem sending these out in the past till now. I
am getting error message 17099 and syntax error 5.5.4 which I looked up to
be a connection with my ISP. As I said, I have not had a problem in the
past and the domain server I work with is set to allow me to send up to 300
addresses in one email.

But what is really weird is that for each address, I see double icons. In
other words, in the ³To² line, where there should be 5 groups listed, each
group is represented by a double set of icons. Is it possible that
Entourage thinks I am sending out over 1,000 addresses? Is this a corrupted
prefs file? I am working in OS 10.4.11 and Entourage version 11.4.0
(080122).

Yours,

Stan

Is the SMTP your work address? Is it possible they changed the number
allowed recently.

Not sure what is going on with the double icons. Haven't heard that reported
before. You could export your contacts and test them in a new Identity to
see if database corruption might be playing a part. Groups aren't exported,
but you can use Paul Berkowitz's Export Import scripts to get groups.

ScriptBuilders: Export-Import Entourage 1.3.10

It's probably just a bad address that causing the error.

Thanks, Diane. I can't find any address that looks odd and I have only
recently added one or two new addresses. I have asked my ISP and my domain
server guy if anything has changed on the rules so will wait to see what
they have to say.

On the subject of a corrupted database, how could I check and/or repair
that? By database, do you mean what Entourage stores or deeper within the
OS system levels? That was why I originally was asking about a corrupted
preference file. Would Disk Utility fix a corrupted database? I do have
MacHelpMate if that would do anything.

Switching identities sounds like I'm hitting the nuclear button. So if I
switch identity, what do I call it? My current identity is probably "Stan
Boelman"; do I call the new one "Stan" etc? I guess I could always delete
the old identity and then rename it again. How is email traffic affected?
Any other issues I should be aware of before this?

I assume the script job is able to seamlessly export and import stuff?
It's probably just a bad address that causing the error.

This last intrigues me as it is often the simple is the most common source.
What would constitute a bad address, however, as I can't see any thing that
is unusual. The @; .com; .co.uk; etc all seem to be in the right places.

Entourage stores it's data in your Identity's database inside the Microsoft
User Data folder. General problems with Entourage or any application relies
on system files that can affect performance. When you open Entourage with the Option key held down, it will bring up the
database Utility. You can select to Verify or Repair you database.

No

I do have
MacHelpMate if that would do anything.

Won't help here.

Anything you want.

You might be confusing Entourage's Identity with the system account User.

An identity is a complete personality of Entourage, containing (preferences,
account settings. A User is a term used by the Mac OS. The terms Identity
and User are often confused. Entourage stores your data in an Identity, and
the Mac OS creates Users.

Your identity is named "Main" by default. It is located in the Microsoft
User Data folder.
I assume the script job is able to seamlessly export and import stuff?

Yes, but it does require user participation.
This last intrigues me as it is often the simple is the most common source.

Sometimes you can identify the bad address because it has a blue icon in
front of it.

Got it. You're right, I was confusing users with what is in that data
folder (which I never really look at). I can just rename the second Main 2
or something.

Sometimes you can identify the bad address because it has a blue icon in front
of it.

I'm aware of that one; happens when I delete the address from my address
book, I get a round icon replacing the old name.

Another possibility? I just noticed that in my keychain list, I have
duplicate keys for my email passwords. There is two each for each of my
email account passwords; their creation/modification date and time are
identical. Why would I have two of those and is it possible that Entourage
thinks it has a multiple personality?

And I've also checked for corrupt database and it is good.

I'm beginning to get desperate now.

The Keychain isn't really smart about duplicates. I have a newsgroup that
changes the password quarterly. I add the new password, but the Keychain
never deletes the old. Thus I have multiple entries for that newsgroup.
However, the Keychain seems to work as expected.
And I've also checked for corrupt database and it is good.

Some 2008 Identity report back as good, but are not. I suggest creating a
new Identity for testing. Enter some test data and see if the problem still
exists. If it goes away then manually move your data over.

I suggest creating a
new Identity for testing.

Did it, same problem. I created a new identity and then manually added only
three names in addresses. Then I created a group and added all three names.
Then opened a new email and pulled down the address book icon and the group
shows up with a double icon image. New identity, old problem.

You know, since joining the newsgroup on Entourage, I have seen nothing but
complaints about version 2008 and stuff. I am also on a Mac forum,
Snarkish, and all the responses I got from them were the same, "I never use
Entourage; Mail only." I am beginning to wonder if that is my future.
Unless I can get this sorted, I need to just ditch Entourage for good.

Help!

OK, this is really desperate but just wondering why there is a Main Identity
folder and a folder marked Office 2004 Identity? I note that the Main
Identity doesn't show any changes since December or so whereas the Office
2004 identity shows modifications from today (obviously it is keeping
current). How do they work with each other? Any possibility there?

Groups are supposed to be the double icon image. A single contact is one
icon.
