double spacing on envelopes

Why is the delivery address double spaced? Also, I have discovered how to
change the position of the delivery address but can this changed setting be
saved as a default?

If you have modified the Normal style to be double-spaced, then the Envelope
Address style (which is based on Normal) will also be double-spaced. You
will need to modify the Envelope Address style directly. You can change the
position of the delivery address by changing the position of the frame that
is part of the Envelope Address style and then saving that style change back
to Normal.dot (or Normal.dotm in Word 2007).
