Double-Spacing text?

M

Mike

I have an existing file that someone gave to me that has double-spaced text
in it. I copied and pasted some new text and also type new text in the
document and it does not automatically have double spacing set. How can I
highlight selected areas of text and set it so that the text is
double-spaced?

Thanks.

Well, literally, you highlight it and go to Format | Paragraph, and set Line
Spacing to Double. I believe the default shortcut key is cmd-2 (maybe)*.

However, for the concept behind what is happening, see here:

* [and I had written] and if you are using the Formatting toolbar, there
should be some icons on there that represent spacing [but no, my mistake,
those fools left them off--no wonder people like 5.1 toolbars. Do people
really use increase/decrease indent more than single/double space?]

Great Thanks! Any idea what a shortcut for 1.5 line spacing might be?

Hi Mike,

Go to Tools> Customize> Toolbars & Menus. Click on the Command button and
then on Format on the left under Categories. On the right, scroll down till
you find 1.5 Spacing. Drag the icon to your toolbar. If you want a
keyboard shortcut for it, you can assign one by clicking the Keyboard button
in the dialog box.

One tip: If you're going to be customizing toolbars, you're best off if you
create your own custom toolbar. Then, if you ever have to delete/replace
your Normal template, you won't lose your customizations (since Word's
default toolbars are saved in Normal).

By the way, I went through the earlier posts, and what both of
you may not have noticed is the fact that the icons for line
spacing are available in both the Formatting toolbar and the
Formatting Palette (in Word 2004, at least, and I seem to
remember in Word v.X, too, though I might be wrong) . In the
palette, simply expand the Alignment and Spacing section, where
you will find the three most common line spacing options, 1,
1.5 and 2. In the Formatting toolbar, they're there, but just
not immediately visible. Click on the small arrow at the right
end of the toolbar, and a new submenu, if you can call it that,
will show up, where you can choose line spacing and
subscript/superscript.
Any of these options is probably easier and more
straight-forward (that is, once you know where they're hiding)
than customising a toolbar.

Hope this was helpful.

Thanks, Michel! I use the Formatting Palette so seldom that I forgot about
that.

Look for the fomat menu Icon in the menu bar. when opens click on flipy
next to line spacing (I think) will see three icons one with normal
spacing, one with 1.5 spacing and one with double spacing.

If the menu is over you page unless you move mouse over it , its
transparent. If you have a 17" screen like I have for my Desktop and
PowerBook, you can move it to one side where it won't interfere.

then when you highlight text to give this spacing, just click on the
icom for 1.5 spacing.

Thanks, Michel! I use the Formatting Palette so seldom that I forgot about
that.
Ditto, cause it annoys me. And I had checked the Formatting toolbar, but of
course since I rarely use MS built-in toolbars, completely forgot about the
possibility of an exceedingly inconspicuous arrow at the end. Tsk tsk.
Thanks.

But now that you bring it up, shouldn't there be some way to expand the
Formatting Toolbar so that all those icons show up? I try and try to drag
on the corner but it's just not working.

Or is that arrow just supposed to be a menu, and in that case, shouldn't I
be able to customize it?

(didn't y'all just have this conversation with someone else? But this
behavior is idiotic, right?)

each time you open a section by clicking on the flippy Triangles that
drops down a new section. You can open all of them and once opened if
you close the menu and reopen they will all stay open.

Oh, yeah, thanks, Phillip. I was talking about a different arrow though.
But I for sure need to spend more time with the Formatting Palette.
