Double trouble

B

Ben Silver

I use MS XP Home with MS Office 97. Whenever I open an
existing Word document I get a message reading, "***.doc
is already being used by Ben Silver. Would you like to
make a copy?" Also, if the doc is password-protected,
then it asks for the password twice.

Also, whenever I open an existing Excel spread sheet I
get a message reading, "A document with the name ***.xls
is already open. You cannot open two documents with the
same name even if the documents are in different
folders..." There's more, but that's the gist.

Does anyone know how to eliminate these EXTREMELY
annoying events? Thank you.

Thank you, Suzanne, for the link. I believe I have
solved my problem. And what a great site!

You did? Although leftover temp files and owner files will cause "file
in use" errors, if the file is being opened twice then typically it is
due to a problem with your file associations.

If you are opening the files outside the application, such as
double-clicking them in an exploring window, then your operating
system looks to the file association for the application to open the
files and additional instructions. If the file association "tells" the
os to open the file twice then it will function as instructed.
(Typically the problem is due to the filename ("%1") being included in
the command and in the DDE instructions)

If you find you still encounter the problem then go to Start/Run and
run:

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.
