I purchased student edition of Office 2008 for Mac for my son. He has no
external harddrive to install the DVD. Can he install the product from the
web with the part number on the DVD? Thanks for advice.

I assume he has a MacBook air. The short answer is no, it can not be
downloaded. He will need to connect an external drive or connect over a LAN
to another mac with a hard drive.

Thanks, Bob for quick reply. Yes, it is a Mac Book Air. Do you know if I
need a special type of external drive or if I can attach any USB drive.

Using a Mac that has a DVD drive, create a disk image of the DVD with
"Disk Utility". Copy the disk image to a flash drive large enough to
accommodate it. Plug the flash drive into the Macbook Air, mount the
disk image and install Office.

Flash drives are relatively inexpensive these days, and one will likely
be useful to him in the future.
