Download Pictures

Forgive me if this has been addressed before but I did not see it by
filtering the threads. I am wondering how to allow Entourage to download ALL
pictures at all times. I find it annoying to have to click to see images
within an email. I am talking about inline images, or html emails. Not
attachments.

Thanks!

Hi JJ,

this question has already been answered, and there's quite an obscure
workaround which requires you to use Entourage's built-in Junk E-Mail
Protection. Open the JEP window under Tools>Junk E-Mail Protection and make
sure it is turned on, then click on the "Safe Domains" tab. In the text
field, enter ".com", ".org" (without the quotation marks) and any other
international domain from which you are likely to receive e-mail messages.
Since they are now in your whitelist, Entourage will automatically download
inline pictures of messages originating from these domains.

You should know that you will become more exposed to spammers if you do
this, so you'll have to decide for yourself if it's not better having to
click on the Download Images button once in a while rather than having
Entourage automatically display every single message, including unwanted
ones.

Hi Hal,

yes, Christopher Breen's right, that's the idea behind the Safe Domains
feature. For instance, I'm subscribed to iTunes Weekly, so I added
"itunes.com" (without the quotation marks) to the Safe Domains list; now
every time I receive a newsletter from iTunes, it automatically loads in
Entourage without forcing me to click on the Download button.

We are definitely going to need more details about why your client "can't
seem to get it to work". How exactly does she proceed? Is her Junk Mail
Filter activated (it has to be, otherwise, the Safe Domains list will be
locked)? Does she have to click on that Download button every time?

Write down everything that might seem of importance, including the version
of Entourage she's using.

Christopher Breen, in an article he wrote for Macworld
<http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2004/06/000245/index.php> suggests
that one can enter the literal domain name, e.g., macworld.com, in the Safe
Domains list and Entourage will download the HTML graphics for messages from
that domain.

A client of mine would like to do this, but can't seem to get it to work.
What is she missing?

I logged into her computer remotely and found the following information:
She's using Entourage 11.2.5. Her junk mail Level setting is Low. She has
three domains in her Safe Domains list and they literally read -
sfnewmexican.com,nytimes.com,mail.southwest.com. She has to click on the
download button every time. Her email account is with Earthlink.

Hi Hal,

well, in that case, it *should* be working. My Junk Mail Filter is set to
"high", and I've got about a dozen or more safe domains, all of which are
working for me. The only difference I find in the setup is that my commas in
the safe domains list are followed by spaces, but I don't think that should
make any difference. Can you verify if the e-mail messages which are not
loading properly come from those exact domains?

Yes, they come from those exact domains. Interestingly, I created a single
safe domain (cnet.online.com) a couple of days ago and I'm having the same
problem with it. Today, I got an email from that domain and I had to click
"Download Pictures," too. I have my Junk Mail set to "Exclusive" with a rule
that routes the cnet.online.com messages to a folder in created in
Entourage.

Okay, Hal, I'm just guessing here, but try and play around with these
settings in Entourage's preferences: under General Preferences, Security,
make sure you've checked "Display complex HTML in messages" and
"Automatically download pictures from my Address Book contacts". Under Mail
& News Preferences, View section, enable "Show attached pictures and movies
in messages". I don't really know what else to suggest, so let's hope this
works.

The only suggestion neither my client nor I had selected was "Automatically
download pictures from my Address Book contacts." That's been done, now.

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow morning when my client receives her
daily messages from the two newspapers in her Safe Domains list.

It used to be that way, and you could enter '.com' to allow pics from all
..com domains to be shown, but that was changed in an update along the line
somewhere. The 'safe domains' now only apply to the junk mail filtering.

That being the case, why does it apparently work for MVP, Michel Bintener?

Hi Barry,

that is indeed strange. I wasn't aware that this functionality had been
changed, but for me, it's still working the same way as I described it.
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from a friend who used a different e-mail
account than the one in my address book, so I had to download the inline
images. But I also received the Mactopia newsletter, and that one showed up
automatically since "Newsletter.microsoft.com" is in my Safe Domains list
(or at least that's what I assumed). Strange...

My client reported that one of the domains in her Safe Domains list worked
on Monday evening after she adjusted the Preferences in Entourage. I'll let
you know what she reports this morning on the other domains.

I'm pleased to report that all of my client's "Safe Domains" now
automatically display inline graphics!

It would appear that the key to making this "feature" work correctly for her
was the addition of the two HTML options in General Preferences/Security.

My thanks to MVP Michel Bintener for seeing me through this one!

Hi Hal,

glad I could help. Also, thank you for verifying that these options are
indeed the ones that control the Safe Domains list!
