Downloaded .doc files open as pictures (TIFF), not documents.

I downloaded several .doc files from host computer (equipped w/Windows XP and
Word 2003) to 60Gig external hard drive. Checked to ensure they were
downloaded (while still connected to the host), and files WERE present in
original Word document format. Later, on trying to open these files w/hard
drive connected to new notebook (comes w/Vista), they would open only as
picture files (TIFF), and could be viewed, but not navigated as document
files. I installed Windows 2002 onto the new notebook first. Tried updating
my Word 2002 version, but still get just picture files.

Any thoughts as to how I can successfully download the .doc files as such?
Others in our work group are doing so. Thanks much.

What is Windows 2002 and why would you install it over Vista?

How do you know that the documents are opening as TIFF pictures?
